The cost of repair in the US is nuts (with new OE parts at a dealer body shop).

Most insurance companies go by the cost of repair using all new OE parts at a dealer's body shop and if the cost of repair exceeds 75-80% of the vehicle's value they'll "total" it, cut the owner a check for the value, and send it to the salvage auction (unless the owner chooses to buy it back from the insurance co and fix it themself). Independent shops (or doing the work yourself) and aftermarket or used parts are much more reasonable but this is not what insurance companies go by when deciding to "total" a vehicle.

In the US at a dealer's body shop with new OE parts that is easially $4k-6k worth of damage to a vehicle that is probably worth $4k-5k at most so the insurance company will just "total" it out rather than fixing it.

Example of new OE parts at dealer prices:
Door shell: $520
Fender: $330
Front Side window glass:$250
Windshield: $430
Side mirror: $150
Door Trim: $130
Door Hardware (hinges, bolts, etc.): $200
Rocker pannel: $150

so over $2k just in parts, plus probably $1-1.5k in paint (the new parts come unpainted) and $95-$140/hr. (depending on dealer and area) for body labor.
