how would you mount it? I like the idea and want to hit up the junk yards now for one. Would it have to mount to the the tailgate? I am trying to picture how ths would mount. Would you swing it down from the bumper to open the gate? I have thought of just attaching the mount to the gate but that would weight it down a lot and keep it from staying open. Let us know your plans.

Not real sure how you would go about mounting it. Just using self tapping screws I think wouldn't be secure enough. Might would fall off on the road.

I think you would have to mount the hinge to the bumper and just drop the tire down to lift the gate. that could put a lot of pressure on the bumper and tire rack. Not seeing how this will happen the more I think about it.

For mounting it I looked at a bunch of JY possibilities as well. The biggest issue you run into is that the taillights for the XJ's block any kind of side mounted tire carrier (which is how the Bronco one mounts.) If you can get it to work, self taps are a BAD idea. Get some grade 8 bolts, washers, nuts, rubber grommets, and some Permatex "The Right Stuff" gasket maker. Take off the rear interior side panel and get access to the inner body panel back there. Drill the bolt holes through the body, sand/file them down, then prime them. Put in the grommet, and make sure your bolts can slide through. Put some of the Permatex on the mount plates, put 'em on the body, and get your bolts in. tighten down the bolts using the washers and nuts on the inside of the body. Let that sit for a day to fully cure the Permatex so you don't get any shifting/water leaks later on. After that, put the swing arm back on and you're good to go. It's the same mounting process the factories use. Hope it works for ya. I couldn't find anything that would work so i went through Detours and love their tailbone set up.

If it was me, I would make a swing bar to go on the bumper, then make a bar coming straight up and weld that tire carrier on(after some trimming on that carries). And you defiantly would not want to tap holes, you think of the weight of a tire and rim you need something more secure. What no rdplz said is perfect, if you have an after market back bumper you could probably get by with nuts, locking washers, and bolts.
This is what I am talking about, http://www.rangerovers.net/outfittin.../rearbump.html
It would be more work, but would look alot better than a tire carrier that folds down, that would be a PITA if you think about it.
