Default Airbag light

What causes the airbag light to come on? Will it deploy if its on?

mine always comes on , my problem accurs when going thru deep long water holes , it will not deploy just because the light comes on , the senor will still need to have an impact , and with the light on meaning usually a bad connection the airbag may not deploy at all even in an accident

On a car the sensor is behind the front bumper. I have no idea where in a Cherokee. I have heard that the sensor is in the center console but I have never had a new enough XJ to have personal knowledge of that.

Several guys on the Comanche Club have transplanted XJ consoles into their MJs and reported the sensor for the airbags under the box part of the console, mounted to the hump.

thats deff an odd place for a front impact senor , what that sensor might be if for the seat belts , some vehicles have the sfatey restraints tied in with the airbag , i know atleast on some fords if you unplug the seat belt so that the buzzer stops chiming telling you to buckle up, the airbag light will come on , its possable that newer cherokees have the same thing

To answer your question........a short in the system or loss of communication between air bag module and bcm will trigger the light on. When the light is on the airbag system is dissabled. The air bag itself is always armed and in some bizzare and unusal cases it can and has been documented as deploying, but that is by far rare comditions. Seat belt connections and clockspring in the steering wheel are the number 2 reasons for the system to fail and put the light on. You can go to Autozone or other places like that and have them pull the code for you to find out were the trouble is.
