97 XJ with Infiniti sound system - 5 1/2 inch speakers?
I'm getting pretty good at taking the door cards out of my XJ.....
First I tried 5 1/4 inch speakers* - they were too small and the bolt holes were inside the stock factory holes.
Then I tried 6 1/2 inch speakers** - the baskets wouldn't even go into the hole so I couldn't check whether they would clear the window glass.
So I did what I should have done in the first place and turned the house upside down looking for a tape measure. My stock speakers are exactly 5 1/2 inches if you measure across them and ignore the mounting tabs. The gap between the bolt centres is exactly 6 inches.
Who on earth sells speakers that size in 2 ohm? I'm starting to understand why everyone really hates the Infiniti system

It sounds like you need to find shallow mount 6.5 speakers.

If you are willing to get a little bit creative and maybe cut it just a little bit you can end up with a much better sounding system.
Since the stock speakers aim at your feet, and our feet don't have ears in them, you might fancy a set of component speakers and locate the tweeter on top of the dash or on the window pillars. The woofer in the door. You might need to mod your door a tiny bit, but they will sound a dozen times better.

Thanks for the replies. I'm starting to wonder if I've run into another "UK special" issue. The original speakers are definitely 5.5 inches across which is a weird size. The 5 1/4 inch speakers are too small to centre in the hole.
Both sets were components, I was looking to replace the stock tweeters at the same time but until I can get some woofers that fit, I'm a bit stuck. The only way I could get the 6.5s to fit would be to mount them on the door cards but that's too much of a hack job IMO.
Hmmm, more research required!

hi Morat, both of my front speakers were shot,so like you i was trying to find suitable replacement speakers, not easy....in the end i bought a pair in Maplins for £19.95...ok they maybe not the best of speakers but i find them quite good..they wont mount in the door because of the large magnet..fouling the window glass..so in the end i cut the door card speaker grille away and mounted the speakers into the door card..that way theres no problem with the window glass fouling the magnets.and with the new speaker grilles on..its looking ok..and sounding so much better..nice and crisp and a nice punch from the bass.the rear speakers are ok at the moment...but i may well pop into Maplins and buy another pair of the same type of speaker and fit them to the sound bar...anyway just a thought for you..regards Den.

It's not a UK special. They are just an odd size to begin with.
I use in mine. Though 6.5", their mounting holes are a little different than common ones, and lined up perfectly with the factory mounting holes. There is a non-shallow version of these, and though the mounting holes are the same, their swivel tweeter interferes with the door panel slightly.

Bluelight, did you have the infinity system with the amp under rear bench? I'm really excited to hear that there is a decent speaker out there that fits properly. If they work with the stock infinity system then I might just have an accident lol.
If not I guess I'll look for another amp to fit the speakers. I've got a set of 4 ohm 5.25" components that I could use in the sound bar or maybe the 2 ohm 6.5s that didn't fit in the front....If I keep the stock amp. Decisions decisions
Ken same question really and can you remember which model you bought? Although I really want to keep the door cards stock I don't want to buy a new amp unless I have to!

hi mate,i cant remember the model number of the speakers i bought from Maplins...but i will have a on there website and if i see them i will post up the number for you.yes i understand what you said about keeping the door card as standard..i would have liked to have done that..but i never gave a thought to the size of the magnet on the back of the Maplin speakers...so..in the end the grille on the door card had to go to allow me to fit the speakers...but it was worth it for me as the sound is very good..but see if you can find a speaker to fit straight in..good luck mate.ps have a look on the Maplin web site and type in the code L22AT there the ones i fitted to my front doors..£19.99.i may well buy another pair for the rear sound bar...regards mate..Den

I actually only have the standard system. Not the Infinity. I would say I wouldn't think the door could be much different, but my '95 and '99 have different speaker cut-outs. My '95 door cutouts will work with almost any old cheap aftermarket 5.25" or 6.5" speakers, while for my '99 I had to find these Infinity speakers in order for the holes to line up. That said, with or without the Infinity system, the later model XJs seem to be difficult to find direct fit door speakers for.

I went with these for my front doors. http://www.crutchfield.com/p_130TSA1...5C.html?tp=106
The woofers fit without any modifications whatsoever.

I'd used other 6.5" speakers in the past (AudioVox, Pioneer, Kenwood) and they fit, but I had to drill new mounting holes. These Infinitis are the first ones I've found that were a direct fit, using the original two mounting screws.

Well, I've caved and bought a third set of speakers. I suspect that the 6.5 Infinitis won't play well with the Infinity amp because the OEM speakers are 2ohm. Let's see how it goes - 10 day delivery time from the USA. I couldn't face paying the same price as the speakers for 7 day delivery!
