'89 XJ Trunk Door
I want to do something unique with my XJ and I want to make the trunk either a vertical split swing out style or a curl up style trunk door (like a garage door almost but for a trunk instead). Would either be cool or just plain stupid (like low profile tires on a Jeep)? And if it is even a feasible thing to do at all?

I I think i recall seeing someone who had done a barn-door (think old suburban) type setup, and the sheer amount of fabrication and foolery involved in getting it to work properly was staggering. Didn't look all that great, either.

if you do the barn door you can always salvage latches and strikers from a suburban even hinges. but your looking at a descent amount of fab work. wouldnt go for the curl up door.

It should look like this because I found out that it is possible to use a Comanche rear hatch and put reinforcement where the mount points would be because fiberglass won't hold a hatch of course. I would just cut the current stock hatch horizontally so I can keep the window and not have to worry about added blind spots. (My dad had installed extremely strong hatch Pistons, or whatever they're called, and the trunk literally opens itself when I press the hatch button. So that's another reason why I would keep the top part). I was also thinking of just using the edge part of the Comanche hatch and weld the part of the current hatch which is visible on the exterior to it so I don't have a weird look and I can keep all of the original electronic stuff and license plate mounting points. If that made sense to anybody would it be a good route to go?

And I want to do this so I can sleep in the trunk when I go camping but I am just a smidge too long to fit on the available space so it would help with added leg room (helps when their is a lucky +1 ). And also when I open the trunk it won't smack me in the head when I go to get something because I have to duck to stand under the current hatch XD
