Hi folks,

I have a 2001 XJ that I hadn't driven much for awhile (several months). As such, it was no surprise that my battery had totally died.

I went to Advance Auto and bought a new battery and installed it. The Jeep starts up now, but it *struggles* to turn over. It basically whimpers to a start.

Any ideas what would cause this situation? I am at a loss and the winter is fast approaching... I need my Jeep to run and start strong, every time.

You need to upgrade your battery wires and ground connections. 2 or 4 gauge wire works very well. Most parts stores have in premade lengths or you can buy a roll of black and red welding wire and make your own.

Check and clean all grounds, both battery terminals, and the terminals on the starter to begin with.

it could also be your starter itself.

Correct, I had a starter that would crank slower and slower over a period of time. Battery and cables were ruled out. Replaced the starter and all was well.
