Default 1987 Cherokee XJ - $2500 ???

1987 Cherokee XJ with 4.0, 4 doors, 5 speed, body looks good in pictures except for ugly faded paint, interior not too bad, 170K miles.

They are asking $2500.

Seems a little high to me for that year, but then I always say miles and condition are more important than year. Looking for a primary 4x4 vehicle to replace our FWD car.

It's about an hour away here in Montana, but it has Tennessee plates. (Rust...?)

Should I go look at it ???

Does seem kind of high. I agree. But mechanical condition is what matters, then cosmetic. If it all checks out, maybe $2000?

If its rust free and runs and drives fine its not that out of hand.

Well, a 1999 with automatic and 3" lift popped up on CL for $2900

The one exterior photo looks like brand new.

I'm going to check that one out first.

99 is regarded as the best year for the XJ

Eh, I'd rather a late '96 model before they changed the look.

I wouldn't mind the older interior, etc but we're looking for a primary vehicle that will be mostly driven by my wife, as she does all the shopping trips to town and likes to go places more than I do. It would also be used for a once a year trip out of state and daily in the winter hauling 5 gallon jugs of hot water to our horses on the other side of our property.

I would prefer a manual but she really needs an automatic. I already have my truck which is an old full size chevy 4x4 - looks like hell but runs and drives nice.

Whatever we get needs to last a long time because there is nothing made anymore that we like or that would even work for our needs. The newer four/all wheel drive vehicles are not really even intended for use off of paved roads

I bought my 89 with 160k miles, 0 rust anywhere on it, for $500. It needed some engine work, but i've done most of that myself, and its a running driving machine for less than $1500 (if you don't count the tools/time/modifications)

It has a clean interior, and pretty straight body too.

Well, I don't have a decent shop to work inside, and we really need something to drive right now - not in six months or a year. Of course, anything is going to need maintenance and basic repairs over time.

Anyway, the guy with the 1999 already has two people looking at it this evening, so we probably won't get a chance at it. I had checked CL last night about suppertime and not again until after chores this morning. I'm not going to buy anything that I can't see in daylight; it's dark by five pm here now plus we have morning/evening chores.

Edit: The 1999 Jeep is sold as of 5pm MST
