You're half right, it's not three-phase but it's also not single. Each hot leg is a phase.

Phases are the hot lugs. That's also how many lines are running into your home. When you look at a typical distribution powerpole, there is vertical orientation and horizontal orientation. Not counting telephone and cable, there are normally 4 electrical wires on that pole. Horizontal orientation will have 3 wires running up top (A phase, B phase, and C phase) and one line below or on top of the crossbeam (neutral). Vertical will have 4 lines running from top to bottom A, B, C, and Neutral. Typically, the number of phases you have running into a house is 2. A phase, B phase, and the neutral. 110v is what comes off of each lug on the transformer at the powerpole. An electric motor will run off of single phase (1 hot leg and the neutral) but that's 110v only. 220v requires 2 hot legs - or 2 phases. Dryers run off of 220v because 1 phase is for the motor and the other phase is for the heating element. Let's not forget that each phase needs the neutral to complete the circuit in AC power - but can share the neutral (not to be confused with ground).

So a 4-wire dryer plug will have A phase, B phase, neutral, and ground on the plug. A 3-wire dryer plug will have A phase, B phase, and neutral on the plug. Any modern day dryer will be 220v.

That was a good bit of info! I am scouting for a new building that has 3 phase power. You can find it industrial areas and near big farming operations. it's cheaper to use. You can tell if a machine is 3 phase by looking at the input power tag and appliances will have four wires.

When I became a weldor I quickly found out that accidental electrocution is easy to do and easy to avoid. New dry gloves are essential and regular replacement of worn parts. Easy in word, not so much in practice.

The other day I was welding in the garage on a hot day ~100 degrees in the garage. I had to tack some framing on the ground so everything remained flat. I noticed my knees were a little sweaty... So I quickly decided It was smarter to tack everything in uncomfortable squatting position vs's on my bare sweaty knees Luckily I've quickly been able to correct any safety concerns before they were an issue. Also maintaining a good ground to your work (if possible), and if not, as close as you can is good practice. Always give the current a better path than yourself to go.

I'm still having trouble learning that s**t gets hot and stop trying to handle it right away. Takes a lot for me to learn.

lol... all I know about it is thanks to doing a little time w/ the electric company... gotta learn a lot, even as a groundman... linemen may be roughnecks, but they have to know a good deal about electricity... formulas and all

was too much diggin' for my taste

Nice work there 616! you are getting some nice welds on that machine of yours!

I welded up a pitman arm and got all my bars to line up and steering box to match the knuckle reach a couple of weeks ago and started on new spring mounts for the rear leafs.

thanks guy! not bad for self taught. started out on a cheapo HF flux.... that POS taught me quick how easy it wasnt to get a smooth nice bead. jumped to a decent MIG, and couldnt be happier. now just to learn to TIG.

[QUOTE=XJwonders;3117634]Welded my 231/300 doubler shaft

I ordered 1/16" 312 today after scratching around the shop and finding nothing in that alloy. I read up a bit and it seems like the best choice. I need to find a piece of the correct spline to connect with the D300, I think I have the other end of the shaft somewhere in the scrap barrel. I have a needle gun and have had great luck with using it on fracture critical parts.

Thanks for leading the way, I hope it works!

Not an optometrist, but I would think you'd want to see what you're doing...just me though.
