Hope this is the right section for this.
I know there have been several threads about building roof racks and I really like many of the different ones people have built. However, for my needs I do not need a "basket" type and really don't want to spend a lot of money on buying a pre-made kit. All I really need is a section of rail going down the sides that I can secure my kayak with. I have pretty much determined that a very inexpensive way to go would be to use some electrical conduit. Home Depot has 10 foot sections for like 4$ My problem is figuring out how exactly to attach the rails to the roof without a welder or having to put holes in the roof. My Jeep currently has the stock roof rack with the channels that go down the sides and the cross bar things. Just trying to figure out how to get a couple side rails up there nice and secure. I thought about using some 90 degree angle metal and some small U bolts, but I still can't quite picture how to attach it to the existing equipment with or without the bars that go across. The bars that go across are not in the way but don't need to stay there either. Maybe I am not very creative but I just can't imagine the materials needed to do this. Any ideas on how to do this? Thanks in advance. |

here are the pics.
the mounts are not finished, still have to smooth off the edges, sand and paint and get good fasteners. easy to make, I used 1.5" metal bar from home depot, cut it, bent it, drilled it and screwed them toghether. hope this helps FRED |
