Well, I finally got tired of my spare being on the roof rack and built my carrier. I started the bumper 3 years ago and finished it just recently. It's made from 2x4x3/16" sq tube.
I got the hinge from http://www.atozfabrication.com/store...Hinge-Kit.html Very good service. I opted for the heavy duty option. I used all 2x2x3/16" sq tube. I started thinking I wanted the tire to be straight, but then decided to tilt it back. I thought it looked better, plus helps center the weight over the swing bar. Latch system is a pin from a GM diff spider gears that I had. I welded it to a piece of angle iron. I welded a piece of pipe in the swing bar that the pin goes through, with a spring pin to hold it closed. It all fits tight so it doesn't rattle around. Future plans are to add mount for a jerrycan, and maybe a mount for the Highlift.

x2 on the side supports but looks good il be building a tire rack for my bumper soon im sick of having it in my cargo space wasting space

I'm a big fan of my rear view mirror, I'm assuming you can't see much with that bad boy in the way!

I thought about that, but it seems pretty stout as is. Any reason to why that I'm not seeing? What are the problems on the trail without them? Enlighten me!

I is an obstruction, but thats what side mirrors are for. I can still see around it enough for me.

this is just one example but with no support you could hit a bump and the metal could sway and start to bend it your using your rig as a pavement pounder i wouldnt worry about it but a bumpy off road trail you may want to reinforce

Another reason for reinforcing it, so you'll have some extra space to mount those jerry cans! and it may seem strong enough now but the weight of the tire moving around back and forth could play havoc on your welds. Very clean job by the way, I'm liking it! I have the stock tire carrier option, but my rear bumper is slowly getting trashed. Maybe it's time for an upgrade if you know what I mean...

Good points! TBO, it is pretty much my DD and sees the pavement more than the dirt, but I'm hoping to change that soon. I'll take the advice and add at least one I think for now on the next round.
