I kinda figure that too. Hopefully, I'll never test that theory. I figured the 1/4" mount would be strong enough to do that, but I'm sure the 3/8" is. Thank you for the compliment.

that is a great looking bumper..and even though it took you awhile, it shows you took your time and did it right! when i saw the finished pics of it painted, i thought it looked clean and definitely stout!

i've got a decent bumper on mine too, but i didnt build it, the guy i bought the jeep from custom built it..like yours, id hate to be on the receiving end of anything in my way lol..its bolted to the frame underneath like yours with heavy *** bolts!

damn dude you build my bumper lol. well the same way i was going to build mine when i got around to it. glad you said the 1/4 was overkill because that is what i was going to use. now ill just use 3/16. that and all i have is griding disks to cut with that would have really sucked. i was going to mount mine flush with the grill but i like how yours turned out. how far out from the grill is the bumper sticking?

Thank you. It's funny you mention about it being overkill. I started thinking how I wanted to respond. I personally do not think it's overkill, at least not too bad. I'm not a metal worker by trade and I feel the 1/4" is something that I will never have to worry about. I like knowing the fact that as long as the welds are good, my bumper will stand up to ANY abuse that I can put it through. I really called it overkill because the guy helping me weld it and a few others have laughed at me over it being so heavy duty, but my friend that welded it, said that if he didn't already have a JCR Off Road bumper, he'd build one for himself like mine. I have since noticed that JCR Off Road and some others uses 3/16" for their winch bumpers, but if you notice, a lot of them also will use 1/4" for the mount. You could use the grinders for cutting that pretty easy, but you will have to be very careful and follow a good line that you mark all the way around. I could see myself not keeping my cut good and straight using a grinder. They can be hard to control sometime. Also, you asked how far it sticks out from my grill, from the center of my grill to the edge of my bumper is 2.5".

for everyone thinking about using an angle grinder for cutting this stuff: don't if you have a circular saw. You can get 7" metal cutting discs for a circular saw(meant for 7" angle grinders but they fit and work perfectly) you can get straight cuts...even if it takes FOREVER to cut through 1/4" steel. And its cheaper than having to go out and buy a daggon plasma cutter.

it took me only 1 disk and about 5 minutes to cut thru my 3/8" steel to make my cuts for the bends in mine... (i plasma cut the rest but we over heated the breaker in the shop and had to let it cool down and i could not just sit around and wait)

I do recommend getting the 7" disk if you do not have a plasma cutter tho...

when you're doing what you did, its a lot easier. when its a 33" long piece of 1/4" plate it takes like 15 minutes.
