I am looking to make something similar myself. I want to some how connect it to the stock rails. The only thing is I don't need the whole basket type shape just some side rails that I can run a ratchet strap through to secure my kayak to the top with. Not quite sure how to go about it while making it nice and strong but inexpensive.

Very cool racks from you guys. I'm digging the EMT racks, but from what I know- galvanized conduit has some nasty stuff in it. Are you guys wearing a respirator?

i have a buddy with a stock jeep zj, he has the stock roof rails and all he has done to carry 2 kayaks is strap them down and he got some foam things from Gander Mtn (outdoor store) he has driven i dont know how many miles with this setup and he trusts it to put his 1 year old NICE kayak on that he saved up for years to get so i guess its a good way. hth

Yea galvanizing is not a fun thing to breathe......just make sure you grind the area really well before welding.

Here is a pic of the one I just finished for my Jeep. I have about 50 bucks in it give or take a little bit. It is made out of 3/4 emt electrical conduit. Only issue is the paint doesn't like to stick very well. Additions to come will be a bike rack, fog lights, and expanded metal floor.

there was a guy on jeepforum that made one for his XJ out of wood. there were a lot of peopl ebusting his balls about it on there. however, i was not one of them. i thought it looked good. it was as long and wide as the roof. was maybe 6" tall, and held a crap load of gear! he somehow had it mounted to the stock siderails that run front to back, not the load bars that go side to side.

you can buy things that mount in the gutter that runs along the top on the sides.

i will try and get a few close up pics of how i mounted mine but i used the factory running rails and drilled holes and then used hooked eye bolts to mount it with.
