Any tips for welding overhead? With both 6011 or 6013. I tried it on a couple test pieces at work and it wasn't as good as I can do flat. I appreciate all the help so far. I also tried running some 7018 on ac and I couldn't strike an arc or establish a solid one without sticking the electrode a billion times first. Do you just have to have the metal super clean? I saw the bit about holding a longer arc but I can't even get that far haha but I know that I would prefer 7018 for how good it looks. I definitely have no problems grinding some ugly welds if I have to though. As long as my leaf springs don't come popping off my jeep in the middle of a trail, ill be a happy camper.

Overhead stick is just something that takes practice. You have to go faster than you would on flat. 7018 is gonna be tough on A/C. Don't touch the tip to the metal, try to drag it lightly to start the arc. And yes, it needs to be super clean. You should ALWAYS clean the metal as much as possible

Thanks. Maybe for this project ill stick with 6013. It'll look fine I'm sure and it seems way easier to use.

When welding overhead you need to turn the heat a little hotter than you run flat/horizontal.

Quoted for truth. Stick should only be used as a last resort.

Automotive welding -> Mig or Tig.

You need to go to your local welding supply store. Not Tractor Supply or Home Depot. Someone who specializes in welding equipment and rods. There are specialty rods on the market that will work. Even down to a 1/16 if needed. Tell them what u have. Then research it or ask someone you know who may be a welder. Welding rods are high. But when done properly it can be a permanent fix. If Im not mistaken they used to make a 7018AC.

I've heard of 7018ac and I'd love to get my hands on some 1/16 or 3/32 7018ac but ill have to check out the welding supply stores to see if they carry it. I hear that 1/16 6013 is more common.
