Default D.I.Y. Easy, Cheap bumper

So I started on my bumper last night and I took a few pics so i could show everyone how easy it is to make a nice bumper with hand tools. I have a pipe bender but i want this bumber to have a boxey look like the XJ. So here it goes.

First you need a flat place to build on. I use my shop floor, but make sure you check that your floor is level. Then take a marker and slide it along the pipe to get a straight line. This is so your bends or cuts stay on level. you can see the line in pic 2.

I draw out the shape of the bumper on the floor and use it as a ruff outline. You can use a speed square to get your angles. Then cut half the angle in to one pipe then half in the other. So on my front angle it was 35 degrees so I cut each pipe at 17.5 degrees and so on.....

Now you can see the top part of the bumper. I'm using a little 110 gasless welder to tac the bumper together and I'll burn it in with my big mig later. now i took the up rights that go to the lower mount and use my speed square and level it to the floor ( with I know is level ). I then added the lower bar and tied it into the upper bar and tac it all together.

now the its time to burn it together. It took me about two hours to cut it and tac it. it took about three to weld it up lol. I had after market tow hook mounts so i mounted the bumper to them. if you don't all you need to do is get some plate and drill a few hole to mount it where the stock bumper mounts. I sprayed it black because that is all i had. It will get flat plate in the open spaces, mainly for looks, and painted to match the trim (what ever look I make my mind up on).

so there you go a bumper built out of scrap pipe. It only took about 18 feet of D.O.M. tubing so it is a cheap build even if you had to pay $2 a foot it would be cheap.

It mounts to the tow hook mounts. I may put a Winch Plate if i add a winch. right now a few people in are group have them so i'm going to be cheap and not buy one lol. I use 120 wall D.O.M.

if all it bolts to is the tow hook points, i'd consider tieing it into the frame rails somehow if you plan to pull from it or put a winch on it. Just my .02

Looks good man. I wouldnt worry with mounting it much better if you dont plan to add any clevis tabs or winch plate. If you do definately put some plate on the framerails and use several bolts.
