I have plans to do this with my current Iphone (about to get a new phone). Except I was thinking about putting it in that section of the dash above the cigarette lighter that is virtually useless. But I'm trying to think about how I would wire it to my sound system.

Hey,
When I did this, I had it so the iPad pushes into the Apple lightning cable. This in turn is connected with the car-radio.
Two benefits: It charges automatically when the car is switched on to at least AAC & it connects to the car-radio without hassle.
The other option is using Bluetooth. I connect my iPhone that way sometimes, when I didn't bring the iPad.
Downsides: Still need to charge the device (separately), Bluetooth needs re-connecting by going into the phone settings (I keep BT disabled to save battery power) Also, not all functions are available for me to control the radio...
The last option issuing a lead from your audio-out jack... Not really worth it anymore considering the above options.
So.. building in a lightning connecter is more difficult, but for me at least, proved the better option.

And I just upgraded phones so my IPhone 5 will be going into the dash. I'll probably end up buying a blue tooth head unit so I can use it that way. I don't really know how else I would be able to hook up the phone to the head unit with out visible wires?
