we need an 'electronics' section for this kind of stuff... cb installs, where do i put my amp and subs, what kind of LEDs should i buy, here is my double din install, where do i run my wires...you get the idea. this section would be so much cleaner without this stuff. but i guess this kind of thing will still happen anyways because it's obvious that some people can't separate 'fabrication' and 'car audio'.

I did a Double Din in-dash in a 97-01 Jeep Cherokee, I think it turned out nice!
Check out my blog post on how I did it!

Dragging thread up from it's slumber.
That's nice work in the 96. I was bored and looking at double DIN installs and this is about the only thing I could come up with. Did you get rid of the center vent altogether? I was toying with the idea of seeing if I could move it down to the ashtray area.

thanks.. and yeah, ditched that vent entirely. the heater controls actually sit inside of it. if the vent was fed by a tube or something, it would be a bit easier to move, but it's literally right out of the airbox itself. to move it would require a LOT of fab work, which would also require removing the entire dash. I plan on cleaning up some stuff in there and finishing off my dash wiring soon, so I'll get some more pics of what'sgoing in back there when i do.

the heater controls sit inside of the dash? So there is no access to them or? About to install a DVD player in my buddies 95 for him. I have a background in installing audio but have yet to put a double din in a xj.

you can see them in the pic?
but yes, the body of the controls sits inside of the old vent. once you get the dash apart and crack the vent piece off, you'll see what I mean.

I was toying with the idea of fabbing an extension for the top radio mount so that it sat more flush with the top of the dash overhang and then I could use a single DIN flip up screen.

as long as this is getting bumped, figured I should update to my current setup. two weeks ago i yarded the doubledin and went tablet instead. apparently I have problems with calling things good enough and done.. lol
and that problem still plagues me, because I already plan on changing it yet again. this change will a bit more.. substantial.. tho.

it won't be sticking around long, but sure.. purchased a nexus7 with the intent of using it for topo maps and such when going exploring, and was going to fab up a mount for it. I'm sitting in the jeep trying to decide on where I want the arm to sit, when it dawns on me.. hell, why not just replace the damn radio? I hardly ever listen to CDs anyway, so I didn't really lose anything in the swap. I can play music from the tablet itself, or tether it to my phone for access to Pandora and youtube.
audio from the tablet goes to the clarion eq above it via a standard headphone/rca cable (for now) which gives me 3 pre-outs with sub control, as well as an extra aux input which I plan on running to a flush mount headphone jack in the center console. sub channel runs to my preexisting alpine amp, and the front/rear runs to an alpine ktp445u that's stashed in the dash behind the tablet. sounds pretty damn good in there now, and I love all the features I picked up with running a tablet as my source. who cares about parking lot traffic jams when you've got Netflix streaming at your fingertips? lol

Nice work. That's kinda what I thought that you did. You can get a pretty nice setup for not much money, especially if you already have the tablet. Nice that the Clarion controls the volume. I hate adjusting the volume on a touch screen.
