How do you "flush" a transmission?
I'm changing the trans filter/fluid in my brothers 1994 Dodge Caravan, 3.0L auto 3-speed tomorrow and want to get as much of the old fluid out as possible. Is there a simple way to flush out the thing without some sort of machine?

Pull the trans cooler hose, put it in a bucket (or any other container), start engine, pour new fluid in through the dipstick tube as the old fluid is pumped out until the fluid coming out of the line is the color of new fluid.

^^ that's about the only way to do it without fancy machines. I always overfill the trans a little before starting this just to be on the safe side.
Now with that said, be careful not to run it out of fluid and know that it can take a LOT of fluid to do this. My buddy has went through 3 gallons trying to flush the 4L60E in his Yukon and it is still coming out black.

Thanks for the input but it seems the transmission died in the van on it's way to where I work today. Goes backwards just fine but no forward in any gear.

I got a small electric transfer pump and homemade fittings to circulate fluid.

Hahaha kidding, in all honesty tho, I might just try to put together an electric pump set up for my own transmission flushes at home. Thats a great idea.
