93 ford explorer
I got an offer to buy a 93 Ford Explorer with 198,000 miles on it for $1,000. The vehicle started fine, drove fine, but has many cosmetic body issues. The 4wd works.
However, it does burn some oil and you can smell it.
What do you guys think? Is this worth it? I don't want a money pit and I am not a mechanic by any means. I just want a truck for the beach as a surf fishing platform.
Thanks

Might serve well for that purpose. Just as an example, I recently bougth a 94 Explorer with 191,000 miles for $350. It had a dead transmission. I threw less than $400 in parts at it and rebuilt it myself (never done it before either!!!). What I knew of the truck before I bought it was, it started first twist of the key after sitting nearly a year (no battery all that time). I also knew from towing it home with engine running, the power steering worked, and it had enough braking power to drag my F150 Supercrew to a stop. And, having sat over an hour just idling, it didn't overheat, no smoke, and no strange (expensive) noises.
For your purposes, it might do well. Remember though, it weighs about 1000 pounds more than an XJ...
