Default ZJ transmission problems

A buddy of mine has a ZJ with a 4 speed auto transmission that's holding its shifts way to long. It only has 150k miles on it. I'm curious if you guys might know what would cause this? He's already planning to buy a new tranny so if there's a fix for this then id like to help him out.

Check TPS and the TV cable. Is it a AW4 (1993 4.0L)? I had almost the same problem, and it was my TPS, with a new TPS (my first new TPS was bad, but my second was good) the shifting was better, but i needed to adjust a litle on the TV cable, since i have the push button type it was easy to adjust, but it wasnt perfect so i adjustet the TV cable 1mm more out and now its much better. You can check the TPS by measuring the voltage on it.

If 1st through 3rd gear shifts seem to take long but O/D and lock up seem ok, then it could be the T/V cable being a little too tight. If it just seems like the O/D and lock-up take too long, then maybe a TP sensor.

IF you suspect T/V then take a click or two out of it giving the cable more slack. You dont want it too loose or make it shift too soon though. If it needs adjustment a few clicks it usually all it needs unless someone maxed it out. T/V adjustment is pretty important and if its too loose you could burn up the tranny, you will know when you are too loose cause it will start upshifting too soon.
