Default You are correct

I bought two key fobs from ebay for 5 bucks, the local dealer programed them for 21 bucks. There is no way to do the 98's on your own.

If you've got another driver, you can pull it and take it somewhere to have it rebuilt. You'd probably save 1/2 of the cost.

Default Found one with 64000 original miles on it

I found a complete transmission with 64xxx original miles on it. I bought for about 2.5 times the cost of a good rebuild kit and I will have a core. I'm thinking I can get a few bucks for it to someone who would like to rebuild one. I think it's very solid except for the bands leaking, what you said is exactly what a dodge/jeep ASE mechanic told me was happening "clutch o-ring seals are hard and leaking pressure" . He said most people and places will not just replace the O-rings but rebuild the whole thing and that gets back into the 2K area.

So now, how hard is it to do a complete swap? Take off drive shafts, remove T-case, line up torque converter and slide on? I'm going to do a flush the poor mans way, a few gallons of cheap fluid and unhook the trans cooler hose and dump in until she runs clean, unless someone knows a better way. I have a friend with a waste oil heater, he loves used oil.

Check your other post. I spent a long time explaining the how-to. DO NOT try slipping the trans shaft into the torque converter that's already mounted on the engine. You can do a lot of damage that way.

Default I did read it, Thank you VERY much

I did see the other posts, and thanks. All good warnings. It appears as with most of these projects, take you time and look three times at everything. I do have a friend who used to be a mechanic and has done several tranny swaps who is going to help me. I say used to, he still is, but now works for an HVAC company because the pay is better; he now is installing large air-handler units. Thanks Again for the tips.

You don't live near Kankakee, do you? My Dad and I stopped near there for fuel on a cross country flight once. Nice country.

Default Nope, south about 150 miles

I am south of Kankakee about 150 miles, right in the middle of the state east to west or side to side. Lots of country roads to put around on but not allot of mud and hills, except for the river bottoms / valleys. The ground is waaaay to valuable as farm ground to allow atv's, jeeps, etc to play on. I also have 4 ATV's, we do have a family farm with allot of river bottom that we can play on; I don't do it too much any more, as I get older I find my desire to get covered with mud and have to fix all the busted up stuff to be much less than it used to be.

Yeah, mud's fun to play in but real bad to get off the jeep, especially the underside. My buddy used to park his Wrangler over a couple lawn sprinklers.

Default Funny

Back in the day (when I was about 25 years younger) I would leave my ATV on back of my pickup and go to the drive through car wash. Yes, the unattended one. It actually did a pretty good job on the top 2/3 of the atv and saved me allot of work. My how times have changed, now when one of my sons wash there atv in the yard they get yelled at because of all weed seeds in the mud. I still have a CanAm outlander 800, atv but it only gets used to plow snow in the winter. I won't let my boys touch my quad other than to move it.

Funny thing is I'd swear (sometimes) my 800cc atv has more hp than my 4.0L Jeep does, it's definitely faster up until 75mph.

It's probably faster because it's not pulling a lot of weight. Some thing goes for motorcycles. Just think pounds per horsepower. My WJ weighs 3980 lbs and with 195 horses, that's 19.8 lbs/hp. Not only that. The 4.0 makes max torque at 4000 rpm.

I've got a lot of drag racing experience. One day a Yamaha snow mobile with wheels pulled up to the start line against a 396 Chevelle. My buddy bet me he didn't have a chance. This was 1/8 mile drags. The sled put him to shame! I won $20 that day!

Default I'm just horsing with ya

I do understand the whole thrust or in this case torque or HP to weight. And yes my quad is fast, especially for a "utility" quad. It's putting out 65hp at 700lbs. That's 10.7 lbs per 1-hp. And the ATV engines aren't what they used to be. It's twin cyl, fuel injected, computer controlled ignition, timing, etc. Jeep 190 hp and ~3800 lbs that's ~20lbs per 1 hp. My neighbor has a few corvettes, I'm always joking with him that we need to race my quad vs his vette for length of his driveway, around 500 ft. It's a sucker bet, now any more than 1/10 ~ 1/8 and it's all over very soon. I've clocked my atv a few times and the 0-60 time is around 4 sec. But the 60 to 75 (top speed) time is substantially more.
Snowmo's and most bikes, even the dirt or motoX are insanely quick. And some are VERY quick and Fast. It's a sucker bet for sure, good call in your part.

Default Key fob reprogram

I had to have my fob replaced as the prior owner of the 94 I bought had dropped it into water!!! The 94 fob cost me $125 to replace and they had to reprogram it for me. That was one of the years where the fobs cost an arm and a leg. Had it been a newer model dealer said it would have been only $25 for replacement!!! Go figure.

Sounds stupid to ask but have you tried the Lucas Tranny fluid fix on this yet? It's about $15 a bottle. Worth a try unless you have mega bucks to buy a new tranny. The stuff worked for a friend of mine's old car (not a Jeep) and they still have the car some 4 years now.

Default Yes I did

Yes, I did do the Lucas fix and yes it made a big difference and really helped. It improved the long shift by a large margin. But, it still shoed signs of long shifts and was starting to slip once in a while. An ASE certified dodge, jeep, Chrisler mechanic actually told me to give it a try. In his words he said it may work a little, it may fix all issues for 15 or 20,000 miles or he said it may not do anything. It helped allot for a few months but as it got colder the problem worsened. Who knows it may have never let us down and I wasted 700 bucks. The mechanic told me what it would most likely do was get stuck in a gear one day and not change, but if not for from home you could limp it along. But, with my son driving it to college 25 miles each way 4 days a week that was not a great situation.
