WK drivers door glass not tinted?
Ive got a 2008 grand cherokee. It has the darker tinted glass all around. It is listed on the option sheet as privacy glass or something like that. The exception is the drivers front door glass. It is hardly tinted if at all. Is this normal? I know there was work done on the front fender and drivers door. It was hit there at one time. Is that glass supposed to be lighter or did someone replace broken glass with non tinted by mistake. It kind of stands out when you look at it especially because the truck is black.

So, after further investigation Ive found out a few things. Pictures seem to show both front windows on most grands are not dark tinted like the back. I checked my drivers window and sure enough its a different brand than the other factory windows. Its been replaced. Then I noticed on the pass window that it was tinted aftermarket to match the rear windows.I can see the edge of the tint right at the edge of the top. They did a good job. Im guessing that the drivers window was tinted too until it was broken and replaced and nobody bothered to have it tinted to match the rest. Maybe Ill have it done to match in the future. Ive got a few more important things to fix first.

Believe this or not, but LEOs need to see the driver so the front side windows are not tinted dark for that reason. If an officer want's to be a putz, he can ticket you for the passenger's window. Your driver's window was probably tinted by the OP with aftermarket film, then when it got broken, the glass replacement company refused to do it. At one time NY State wouldn't allow ANY aftermarket film be used and if you did they would ticket you and not allow it on inspection. Since manufacturers have started using dark tinted windows, that's allowed EXCEPT the front 2.
BTW, I've seen custom cars with dark tinted WINDSHIELDS! That's allowed if it's not driven! Those definitely will not pass state inspection.

somewhat related, but I had a chevy truck that would not keep the cab as cool as I liked here in the SoCal heat so I tinted the window with tint I picked up at home depot. it was not the dark tint, but the solar tint that was light but reflective. worked well. if heat is your concern then that might be a good option for your two front windows.

Thanks guys. You all make a lot of sense. Now that I think of it, I had a 89 nissan pickup that had limo tint on the door glass and I was told by the inspection guy that I could get a ticket for that. It did help keep the cabin cool though, no ac in that one.
