I have a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. The past few days i have noticed about a 1/4 to 1/2 of water accumulating on the passenger side floor board. I have soaked up the water with towels each day but it still accumulates. It smells like dirty water and is not the color or smell of antifreeze. It has been raining alot here (um South Louisiana need I say more). The A/C is working fine and the radiator seems to be ok, as well as engine temp. I have read that it could be a clogged A/C drain valve, water leak from underneath, and many more things, however I have yet to be able to find how to figure out which one of these things it could be. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Where do I even begin to look for the drain valve or the A/C hoses?

The AC condensation drain is on the pass. side of the firewall above the frame-rail. It's a rubber elbow facing downward at the frame. Take a wire and clean it out to see if that's your problem.

Ok so thanks so much for the info!! but umm I have no idea where that is located. I know I sound really crazy but truely this is my first jeep so I don't know where I would even begin to find that. I am not dumb, however, lol!! My dad (yep I am a female) made me jump start my care, change my tire and change my oil before I knew where to put the key!!! I am great with tools (no pun intended, really I don't swing that way anyway) but I can do this myself if I just have a little guidance. Trust me my dad trusts ME more with his boat and camper than my two brothers-in-law. BUT I was a honda girl until now so Im a little lost. I dont mind bringing it to a mechanic but even if I have to do that, Im just the woman who wants to know why and how. Again thanks for all the help! And thanks for the welcome to CF!!!

In the engine compartment on the vertical metal structure that runs cross-wise behind the engine, that's the firewall. On the passenger side look on the fire-wall above the frame for a black rubber elbow that comes out of the fire-wall and points down with nothing hooked to the lower end of it. That's the AC condensation drain. They sometimes get plugged up allowing the water to build up in the HVAC box and leak out onto the interior pass. side floorboard, rather than draining outside onto the ground.

Thanks for the info. I found the drain and cleared it with wire, nothing came out so I am not sure if it was clogged. However I started the car and let it run with the A/C fan on high in a few minutes water was pouring out to of the drain and no water was coming into the car. (I pulled up the carpet and vaccumed up the existing water). Then I went for a drive and water again accumulated on the passenger floor board. I do remember reading something about maybe driving the vehicle is causing the water to flow into the car instead of down onto the ground. Do you think this is what is occuring?

I know that's a problem with the '98 and earlier models, because their drain isn't accessible and drains into the frame rail. But the design was changed in '99. It's possible though.

I have the same Jeep and the same issue. I took a pic of where the leak is coming from



Is the drain on the outside supposed to be an L shape? Mine looks like this.

Same problem in my '99 Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0L...

The gasket/seal around the engine-side of the AC condensation drain was shot. At idle (w/ the AC on) water dripped into the driveway...however, when driving around w/ the AC on the wind blew the water INTO the drain. This is pretty normal BUT since the seal around the drain was basically gone most of that water that was blown back came in around the drain's base and ended up under the passenger side floor.

We replaced the decroded drain base gasket w/ a piece of rubber hose & siliconed it into place....floor's been dry since!

You may want to pull the passenger side kick panel off and see if there is any water behind there. Could be a rotted antenna grommet, or something like that letting water in. Look around the top of the windshield and see if is wet around there, could be a problem with a bad windshield install if it has ever been replaced.

Hey guys, i have an XJ but my girls folks have a grand cherokee and they had this problem with theirs about a year ago. I would olmost swear that they took it to get fixed and it ended up being a bad heter core which is mounted behind the pass dash, causing the water in the pass floor. Cant remember for sure but like 90% sure!

If you suspect the water is entering from the AC drain and thru the firewall, put a hose on the drain and extend it out and down.

I had the AC drain water problem. On my 97 the AC drain is in the frame rail. I cut a hole in the steel rail, added my hose and covered the hole. My floor has been dry since.

Try a search on this forum, I know there's a thread with pics and all for cutting the frame and attaching the new hose....

I'm having the same problem on my Grand Cherokee Laredo 1999. Everything points to the AC drain, but I haven't been running the AC. Could this be happening without the AC running?

Have you been using the defroster? The A/C is used in defrost mode to help dry out the air and defrost the windshield faster.
