The car I keep around for my teenage kid's is getting a bit long of tooth (1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee 300,000 miles).

A friend has a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee (4.7 V8 4X4 Auto Trans 150,000 miles) she wants to sell ... since the transmission puked about 6 weeks ago. She bought a new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee and parked the old one on the curb.

I plan to offer her Kelly Blue Price less the cost to replace the transmission.

What is a guestimate of the cost to replace the transmission?

I plan on making my teenage kids help me install a rebuilt or used transmission ... or walk to school ... their choice.

depending on your area should be anywhere from 1700$-2000$ installed. expect to pay about 500$ less without install.
Take this with a grain of salt as it depends on what has actually happened to it. also, better rebuilt than used as these had some common issues.

Just rbuilt mine cost me 125 for the rebulid kit and 6 hours of my sat have 2000 miles on it and still no problems

I put three used ones in mine before i stepped up and had one rebuilt. If you have access to a shop they are pretty easy to put in. If not I agree with the 1500-2000 dollar range. Most trany shops (that are truthful) cant give you an exact estimate on fixing the one you have until they get into it. There are companies that will just put a rebuilt unit that they have in stock, in for you. This is what I did but installed it myself. It was dead nuts at 1300 with a torque convertor.

My wifes Grand Cherokee lost the reverse gear. The local transmission shop rebuilt it front to back for 1400 and a bag of Redfish filets 2 years ago.

Thats expensive. If its an actual tranny shop dont be afraid to tell them what you want to spend. Make them aware its a 96 and thats a lot of money to soend on something that old. If they want the business they will drop the price.

I got a price of $2800 from a reputable locally owned shop here in Syracuse for a rebuild of my 42re. They're telling me they bore out and install stainless sleeves in the valve body. This seems excessive to me. What are your thoughts?

Sleeves for what? Unless you have a pressure problem or a shuttle shift /hunt than there is no reason to touch the vb in one.

Yeah, that's exactly my thought. I've never heard of shift spools or bores wearing out unless there was lots of grit in the system. My Chevy 700R4 blew clutches and an over-running sprag unit. After rebuilding it myself, I had no problems with the valve body. Why would you want stainless sleeves and aluminum spools in a transmission anyway?

my sprag clutch is broken and a piece got into the rear drum. Took to transmission shop and total cost to rebuild is $2487.00. ouch. I had planned on up to $2k. Went ahead and gave go ahead because I really don't want to buy another vehicle and the only other major repair in 4 years was an alternator. Still way cheaper than making payments every month. this is in portland Oregon cost.

A lot of the cost of a rebuild depends on what "hard" parts need replacing and that's why prices vary a lot. If all it needs is clutches and seals and you bring it in, $250 is a good price, HOWEVER most shops will tell you $1200 for the same service. For that price, they'll put in a new pump, solenoids, governor, and converter so you don't come back complaining if it doesn't work.

Hello. I was gifted a 2004 JEEP Grand Cherokee 6 cylinder with a 42RE transmission. I was recently quoted $4300 to replace the transmission by a shop that doesn't specialize in transmissions by their own admission. The vehicle has 128,000 miles on it. I received it from the original owner. I as astounded at that price. This is Washington, DC though. What I have read is that these things are loaded with sensors and often, issues with the powertrain can be traced back to electrical or sensor issues. In my youth, I owned a 1967 StingRay and a 1968 GTO so, I'm not a stranger to dirty fingernails and scratched knuckles. If pressed, I could buy or fabricate a jack and replace it myself. I've never done transmission repair only replacement. My business has been in the toilet due to the pandemic so I cannot fork over $4300 for this. Does anyone have thoughts or recommendations?
