Default Starter problems, 2012 Grand Cherokee

I tried to start my 2012 Grand Cherokee Limited today but the starter kept running without disengaging from the engine. I pushed the off button several times and the starter would not stop running. finally after 10-15 seconds, the starter stopped running. The engine never acted as though it would start. I tried again a second time with the same result. It is unnerving to listen to the starter grinding away without the engine starting and not stopping when pushing the off switch. Any ideas?

I had a situation on my 2012 ford where a mouse had chewed through a wire preventing the engine from firing. I turned and released the key and the car would continue to run the starter for about 10-15 seconds. apparently it was designed to continue to turn over the starter until the motor fired and after a period of time it would shut down. hopefully this helps to narrow down your issue.

Hi kenr57,

If you'd like to visit a dealership to have them diagnose the starter issues, please let me know if I can assist in making an appointment.

Did you have any of the latest PCM Flash updates.....my friend had a 2013 G Cherokee did the same thing...turned out to be the PCM was not seeing the "start" signal from the switch so it would not energize the injectors.

Your jeep has what is called tip start. You dont have to hold the button or hold the key in start. Just momentary contact signals the computer to run the starter for 10 seconds or until the engine starts, whichever comes first. The problem is not with your starter but with something not allowing your engine to start. You have either a fuel or spark problem or both, as it can sometimes be with these advanced computer controlled engines. You will probably need a pro (dealer) to fix this.
