I do about 75% city driving and 25% highway. The MPG average is 10.3. That just seems terrible to me. I leave it on in parking lots for about 30-40 minutes a few days out of the week, but would that cause the average to be so bad? It's a 97 ZJ 5.2L

Letting these suckers idle for extended periods really brings down the avg. MPG. on the over-head display.

That's about what I get in the city. 17-19 on a trip when I'm not towing.

Im getting around 15 city and 18 hwy and i run 31's... leaving it run idel for 30 - 40 minuts few days a week will add up...have you acounted for that ?

idling for extended periods of time will start to eat at that gas mileage, especially cause your not putting on any miles


but starting jeep up alot will eat at gas as well...

That's what I stated above. Mine warms up faster while driving, after letting the engine warm up for a minute or two. If sitting for longer than a minute I shut it off. That's just me though.

yea you mainly just need to let car warm up for a minute or two depending on temp.


its mostly to make sure you have oil circulating at the top of engine before you take off. If you plan to be sitn in car for extended periods of time w/out moving, turn car off. If you want it on for the heat/AC, then you gotta deal w/gas milage

Sorry to thread jack but I have a question. I just went from 27in to 31in tires and a 4.5in lift. I was getting 300 miles on a tank and now I'm getting 140 to 150 on a tank. Is that normal? Its a 96 XJ 4.0 and auto. Every sensor is new,so is the cat and cat back. I just had it E-checked and they said it runs cleaner than most 3 year old cars they've tested. So whats the deal? It has a 20.2 gal tank and runs like a rapped ape.

welcome to the world of big tires and ****ty gas mileage....your motor and trans have to work alot harder to turn that much more mass.

I average 18-22 mpg with my 96 5.2. I do about 65% in town and 45% highway driving. Towing 2 4 wheelers and a 3 wheeler 300 miles I averaged 13-16 mpg.

I get about 13.5 on average with my 4.0, but its lifted 2" with 30.5" Duratracs... This is all city and starting and stoping and hills. I need to watch the RPMs and keep it at about 1500 rather than 2000 on winding state roads... This allows me to cruise at about 55-60. Highway I get about 19... The computer said 22.5 when my girlfriend was riding with me... haha

It has to work hard enough to cut my mileage by 50%? Ill just run them when I wheel it then. This sucks haveing brand new Swampers and cant use them.

I wouldn't DD swampers anyways...waste of good rubber IMO. The road will just eat that soft tread up and they are loud as F@ck. Get some nice a/t's for daily and you will see a world of difference. To each his own tho
