Sounds like typical ABS crap.

If youre gonna be that way...

Thanks for posting this in the right section
Thanks for searching too.

I gave you a legitimate answer, to me it sounds like your ABS is acting up. The pump can make a weird sound when it kicks in, you feel a pulsing in the brakes when ABS is in action. Another thing to look at would be rear shoe adjustment and warped rotors.
I was going to suggest pulling the fuse and seeing if it does it, but If its anything like the bendix 9 system that is a BAD idea.

Sounds like "they" dont know what theyre talking about. Ive never even heard of a "calibration check"
Time to go somewhere else and get it looked at.

Hey Craig, Welcome to CF. Sounds like your rotors are warped. WJ's, '99-'04 Grands, are prone to this problem. Luckily rotors are cheap, so have them checked/turned if you prefer, but I'd buy new ones.
It has nothing to do with the ABS system IMO.

WJ's don't have rear drums*, they have 4 wheel disc brakes.
*The emergency brake uses the inside of the rear rotor as the drum for the braking surface for the shoes to press against.

Lmao guys, guys... You both drive Jeeps - both of the Cherokee name (Grand or not!) Be happy with that. We're here to help each other, not to diss each other's rides. Hell, look at it this way... neither of you drive Compasses

Why would you put this in Cherokee chat? oh well I moved it.

But yea it sounds like your rotors are warped. Might as well change the brake pads to when you change the rotors.

I have a similar sounding problem with my 1991 Cherokee (39,000 miles) that I recently bought. As the vehicle is literally just coming to a halt the brake pedal pulsates and sometimes but not always, there is a sort of grinding noise.

I have replaced the disks (rotors?) and pads but the brake pulsation and noise are still there.

What am I looking for to explain and fix the problem?

Did you get the new rotors turned before putting them on? Just because there new doesn't mean they are the same thickness, which is what causes the pulsating to the best of my knowledge.
