98 Grand Jeep Cherokee 4.0 Electrical
Hey,
I just started working in a garage the other day. The owner wanted me to try and fix a 98 grand jeep cherokee 4.0L.
Has quite a few electrical issues. All of the gauges except the fuel gauge and oil gauge dont move at all. Those two gauges only move an 8th of an inch when the key is turned.
It wont start either. Just cranks and cranks but nothing. I cant hear the fuel pump either. But the owner just checked it a few days ago and said it was not the fuel pump.
When the computer is hooked up to it, the computer says it cant communicate. edit - he was telling me that it was the ECM - edit
Thats all im going to put for now. I just really want to get the gauges going first and then worry about it starting. Im sure that there isnt enough information here, but I got it started to see what else I would need to post in order to get some help.
Im new to this, but everyone had to start somewhere.
Thanks

With a virtually flat battery, you will get exactly the effects you describe – including the diagnostics failing to communicate. I would be willing to bet that the vehicle battery voltage is less than 10V.
Fully charge the battery – and see what happens.

Ignore my above post – which is complete nonsense since the battery is cranking the engine.
But it might be that the 12V from the battery is not reaching the vehicle’s electronics at full voltage for some reason.
