Hey guys I have a 05 jeep grand Cherokee and right now when trying to start it, all it does is click...like the starter isnt engaging or it's faulty. Thing is this jeep has sat for a few years and one of my friends last used it, and I'm afraid it maybe locked up. I know it's a silly question but what size socket do I need to use on the crank bolt to rotate the engine and what direction? Lets just say since I will be standing in front of the engine will it be clockwise or counter clockwise? Also any other ideas as to what it could be? I put a new battery in it, everything comes on just when I turn the key, you can hear the solenoid click and that's about it...

It will be clockwise standing in front. Don't put a LOT of pressure on the breaker bar or you could snap the bolt. You should take the plugs out to make it easier. The starter may be set up as well. Taking the plugs out ensures that if a cylinder is full of coolant, it will be pumped out when you turn the engine.

It could just be a bad starter or poor connection.

A lot of "could's", no sure thing until you investigate.

Thanks for your reply, I did take a breaker bar and some sockets with me today, I got the engine to turn so that's good news...guess I'll be replacing the starter soon...and go from there..

I did check the oil, and it seemed normal, no burning smell, and it wasn't milky or anything...when I get more time I'll replace the starter and hopefully that'll be all it needs...

My advise is to get the starter tested before you buy a new one. It could just be a bad supply wire.
