Hello and welcome to CF!
We're going to need more information like engine size, trouble codes, mileage, etc.
It sounds like it's in "limp" mode, meaning it is allowing you to drive it home after a problem was detected. You can go to Auto Zone or Advance Auto Parts and they will read the codes for free. Write down the "P" codes and get back to us. We'll help you if we can.
You can also get the codes by using the key method. Turn the key on,off,on,off, then on and waiting. The "P" codes will show up in the odometer. Then "done" will appear. When doing the "on" part, the warning lights must come on. A typical code for you would be a P0748 which is governor pressure solenoid.
