Okay, the 231's shift pattern is (starting in the front) 2WD, 4WD, N, 4WD low. the 242 is 2WD, 4WD part-time, 4WD full-time, N, 4WD low.
The 4WD ranges of the 231 are part-time meaning they should only be used on slippery surfaces.
These are transfer cases, not transmissions. they are mounted behind the transmission and select where the power goes. It sounds to me like he switched from the normal 249 constant 4WD case to the 231 without changing the shift indicator plate in the cab. If you get neutral when you shift to low, you've got the 231.

They are about $5 at your local Pick&Pull. Look for the 6's because that usually what's in them. I hope he changed the linkage so you can get 4 lo.

Yeah, my local yard is a U-pull-U-save. A whole transmission or transfer case is $85. Rear axles are $100.
