Internal Neutral Safety Switch
Hello,
I'm having an issue with my 01 Grand Cherokee limited. Last year I had a few intermittent times it wouldn't start. Battery and power were all good but I noticed the reverse lights didn't always come on. I racked the shifter back and forth a few times and it started right up. The starting problem seemed to go away after that for about 5 months. Now its back and really causing an issue. Has anyone had this problem? If it was an external switch, it would already be fixed but I can't even seem to find any information on the internal switch.

What problems are you having, besides the reverse lights?
If you have the 4.0L with the AW4, the NSS is on the passenger side of the transmission. It is external. The contacts inside the NSS can gum up, causing the reverse lights to not work. Being out of adjustment will also cause problems. Moving the shifter back and forth may have temporarily "cleaned" the contacts. The best fix is to remove it, take it apart, and clean it. Search for BleepinJeep on Youtube.
If you have the a 4.7L, it uses a different transmission, and NSS, i think. I have never dealt with the 4.7L, or the transmission. 42RE?

I have the 4.7. The switch is defanitly not on the outside. The trans works fine and aside from the reverse light, I need a new o2 sensor. That has nothing to do with the starting issue. I was wondering if anyone has had this issue before I look for a tray shop. It would seem that the valve body would have to come out and that's not something I want to try on my own.
