I have a 1997 Grand Cherokee Laredo with the straight 6 and the Quadradrive AWD transmission. The truck is bone stock and I'm currently getting roughly 18 mpg on the highway. I drive 80 miles a day for work and was wondering if anyone knew of ways to improve on my gas mileage. I'm a college student as well so funds are tight, buying another car that's better isn't really an option. More looking for bolt on stuff if there's anything. I've done a little research and found some stuff but everything has such mixed reviews. Can anyone help me out?

The only sure fire way to improve the mileage is to get out and start pushing. I get between 16 and 19 MPG depending on my right foot. The best I've averaged was 19.6mpg.

Keep your tires inflated and drive no faster then 60 mph. Coast as far as you can to your stops and take off gently. I've gotten 19 mpg in my GCL 8 cyl but was flat valley driving and drafting trucks whenever I could(most drive right at 55 here now). 55-60 hardly feels like you're moving though. LOL

I travel 104mi/day for work and have tried some stuff. Everything just helps a little. I'm still only getting 18mpg highway. I've done CAI gained .5-1mpg, tune up wires/plugs/cap & rotor gained about 1 mpg and now run synthetic oil & trans fluid gained 1-2mpg. Next I'm going to try the injector swap and after that try E3 plugs and Accel wires & coil.

Jeeps were not built to be commuters. That was never in the 4.0 design to begin with. When you think about it some car companies have built skateboards with doors powered by a 1.8 liter engine. This Jeep 4 liter 6cyl engine is about 1.5 liters, per cylinder!!!

To get better gas milleage either buy a communter car OR, and you wont like this, but along with the exhaust and intake modifications, lowering the jeep ( GASP ) and installing smaller, lightweight rims to reduce rotational mass, along with Sears Road Master high mileage tires. It wont look pretty but you'll get an increase in mpg!

Do a tune up if it hasn't been done lately. Keep tires inflated to proper PSI, and alter your driving habits.

Search the web for "hypermiling" techniques. Driving no faster than the speed when the transmission shifts into overdrive and the torque converter locks up (about 45 mph) and shutting off the engine and coasting down hill until you reach 5 mph will save some gas. But it won't win you any friends on the highway.

Those add-ons you'd like to try are snake oil. How 'bout carpooling or shortening your commute. You're doing well to get 18 mpg.

Crank the air pressure. Not so much that your wearing the center of your tires, but I bet you could go 40psi & that would gain some MPG's.

Experiment with it and check the pattern with some chalk. It makes a big difference and is a free mod.

18 MPG what you should be getting with AWD and a 4.0. There's not much you can do to improve it. You'd be better off putting any money you'd spend on a CAI or exhaust in your gas tank instead. The 4.0 makes a fine commuter, but it was designed when gas was less than a dollar a gallon.
