How many miles too many for 5.2
Hello,
In case you didn't see my numerous postings, both here and other forums, I am in theellent market for another XJ, WJ, or possibly the right ZJ. Well, I found a 98 ZJ that seems to be in excellent condition. The only part that worries me is that the engine has just under on it. The tranny was rebuilt at 145k, but, as far as I know, the engine, t/c, etc were not. Now, the price is right, especially considering how well built the rig is...I'm just leery of the mileage. I don't necessarily mind rebuilding the engine...just want to get opinions on what I'm likely to get myself into.
Also, for some of you guys with the 5.2's, with higher mileage, what sort of issues can I expect as it approaches 200k, aside from the obvious of, umm, it don't run no more, lol. Assuming it was well maintained of course.
Thanks

The 5.2 and 5.9 are very durable engines, I've seen a few still running strong with half a million miles on them! Mopar engine blocks have a higher nickle content in them and that makes for an engine that will out last a lot of other's engines.

I have 198k on my 5.2 and all Ive been doing to it is regular maintenance. It still runs strong. No rebuilds on the trans, tc, or engine. One thing that is prone to failure are the Plenum Gaskets.

So you wouldn't say that at just below 200k rebuilding the engine is an absolute necessity then? Assuming everything else is good of course. Well that makes me feel better about the mileage. I know the 4.0 is fine with that, just didn't have any personal experience the the v-8's.

Keep in mind the biatch is going to leak oil from the front and rear seals....mine has 203k on it. It does not appear to have ever been into, but I have not owned it since new. I would not hesitate to take her cross country. Milage aint Great but at a little better than 18mpg, I can live with it.

163k on my 5.2. Runs great, a slight rough idle every once in a while. Rear main is leaky. My dad picked up. 2001 2500 with a 5.9 for the manual trans to pull out of it so i have a motor ready when she dies

Thank you all very much for the responses. I dont necessarily mind the mileage...just wanted to know what sort of issues I should expect before I buy this vehicle.

The trans was professionally rebuilt at 150K, and the entire suspension(springs, control arms, track bars, etc) was all replaced with a RE lift kit. It seems to be in absolute excellent condition...including the engine. I just dont have any personal experience with those engines. I know the smaller 4.0's will go forever, just wanted some opinions from folks who own them.
