Front Wheel Bearing Question
last ride out I could hear a bit of a wine coming from the front passenger wheel while in a left turn and figured the bearings might need to be greased. looking at the repair manual, it appears that the bearing is a sealed unit, similar to what the Chevy's have? is this correct, and if not can I simply remove the front wheel and axle nut to expose the bearing so that I can grease it?

The front wheel bearings are non-serviceable sealed units. Once they go, they go. Just be sure to take care of how you torque new ones. They will last longer properly torqued. Over Torqued bearings wear out faster. 13mm 12-point socket to take em out. I have a mid-deep socket specific for doing these.

The replacement of the axle half shafts / CV joints requires removal of the wheel bearings. I did both at the same time when my CV joint boots failed.

http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=...1F3C&FORM=VIRE, Not sure if there is a big difference between ZJ and XJ hubs but this should give you an idea. Good luck.

Yes, the best thing you can do for yourself is REPLACE BOTH AT THE SAME TIME! You're not going to want to do that again any time soon. I always use Timkin bearings because I trust them and have used them on all of my vehicles.

I honestly don't mind changing the wheel bearings on jeeps. Sucks when they're rusted in the knuckles but you can get them out fairly easy anytime after that first hard one. Coat the inside of the knuckle in a nice layer of anti-seize. Also coat the mating surfaces with some anti-seize. Put some anti-seize on the splines of your axle shaft too. This will make taking wheel bearings out superrrrr easy in the future. Don't get anti-seize on the bolts that hold the bearing in though. This will throw the torque of the bolts off. You don't want these bad boys backing out.
I tore my entire front end down to the ball joints in less than an hour. That includes jacking it up and taking these damn heavy-azz tires off.
