Default error code P1762 - governor sensor related - 96' ZJ 4.0

hey.. i have this error code i got when autozone scanned my jeep

error code P1762

definition
- governor pressure sensor offset voltage too high or low

explanation
- ECM detected the offset voltage was out of spec for more than 3 seconds

probably cause
- Internal transmission failure
- Open or short circuited condition

anway... at this point im not sure what this code means, or what i should do to diagnose it seperately as i would like some way to be sure whats wrong before i go taking the transmission out or removing anything from it

How does your rig drive after pulling this code. I think the governor sensor mandates a certain speed a car is allowed to go. I've heard of it but never come across it though

you need to replace the governor pressure sensor in the trans

most time the sensor gose bad creating an open cerket causing the comp to read hi voltage.
this can cause shift pattern problems some times.

well at about 15mph i notice the shift kind of hangs before pulling into second gear which has a bit of a jolt to it.. shifting from first to second isnt really smooth at all, is this the reason?... if so, whats the procedure for getting to the sensor?

so far i havent had it to high enough speeds to need more than second gear.. but from first to second it hangs until a higher RPM is reached, and then it shifts... error code says the sensor is off spec for too long..

so is there a valve inside the body of the governor body that needs to be cleaned, or am i looking at having to replace the sensor/solenoid as well?

i could probably find a 42re solenoid/sensor kit to replace both with a new filter and gaskets kit from a local parts store for another $13.. but i need to be sure this is going to fix the problem before i do it since im looking at about a $100 job here

If it isn't to expensive to DIY than go for it. If the code is saying the sensor is bad it might have gotten toast idk.

heres what i think... and you guys can correct my if im wrong

the 42re transmission is an automatic transmission shifted via a solenoid built into the shifter.. the solenoid shifts the transmission but the pressure sensor tells the solenoid when to shift

a failure to shift would suggest a failure of the solenoid

however, eradic or random shifting would suggest somethings buggy with the pressure sensor, and delayed shifting at a higher RPM would suggest the pressure sensor just isnt getting the pressure it needs

my shifting is neither eradic, nor random.. its quite predictable and hangs at the same time before shifting.. so the pressure sensor isnt as sensitive to the pressure as it should be

using logic it would lead me to believe that one of two things could be at fault... first, the pressure sensor can be worn due to its age (200,000 miles on the engine and the tranny is origional) or there isnt enough fluid in the transmission to generate the pressure needed at the RPMs it should shift at

ill check tranny fluid levels though when i checked all the fluid levels before the only thing i seemed to be low on was anti-freeze.. but ill check transmission fluid levels too

now it probably isnt going to kill me either to get a filter and gasket set for the transmission and replace the filter... i doubt this could cause the issues with the transmission, so unless someone knows for sure it can, then i wont bother putting in the new filter and gaskets until ive replaced the sensor/solenoid, though by the sounds of whats happening and the logic used, i think the solenoid should be OK

you are almost there. the pressure sensor tells the comp what the psi is so the trans can shif at the right rpm to psi ratio.
Now a cloged filter can caus this problem because the front pump will not pull as mutch fluid as it needs. i would put a pressure gage on it to see if the pump is putting the corect psi,if it is then i would look into the senso.any one with a good scaner will be abel to look at the trans PID's(trans data) and if thay know what thay are looking at should tell what is bad.

will a clogged filter cause the error reading as well?.. i actually drove it more extensively today to pay attention to the shifting.. and well, at highway speeds i dont even notice it shifting.. its just from first to second... this transmission probably has the origional filter in it (200,000 miles roughly) so i was going to change that reguardless...

oh.. and i was watching exactly when it shifts and its shifting exactly at 2,000 RPMs which seem to be normal... it just feels like theres a bit of a drag between first and second gear

after this is done passing emissions tomorrow (hopefully)... then ill change the transmission filter, gaskets, and oil next week... was wondering if i should use the ATF+4 or the dextron stuff... and wondering how many quarts of it ill need?

not again.
It needs a governor sensor. dont keep driving it if its bad, if its not damaged it will be.
Dont bother servicing it without changing the sensor. its not goint to help. I dont understand why everyone thinks changing a filter is the end all solution. If there is enough debris to clog the filter, the trans is in need of rebuilding.
Drop the pan, inspect for excessive metal and or clutch material, change the governor pressure sensor AND solenoid. Then install your new filter, and fill with +4 atf.

hmm... well its been about a week since the computer was reset... i actually dont seem to notice any shifting problems out of first gear which just drags a bit.. might even be because im so slow on the throttle... but the check engine light has NOT come back on yet after a week and about 60 miles of driving... if it comes back on with the error code P1762 again, ill change the sensor/solenoid, if it doesnt do it by sometime next week im just going to change the filter, gaskets, and oil
