Default Clicking noise

When I start my '99 Jeep Grand Cherokee, the engine clicks pretty fast. Also when I am driving down the road, it continues to click and gets worse when I go faster. One of my friends said something about lifter rods, but what are these and how do I fix them? Any help would be great.

All right Amanda... it could be a sticky lifter (sometimes happens on higher mileage vehicles when the motor has alot of built up sludge inside).

Does it go away after your Jeep is warmed up?
And how long has it been since you've changed/checked your oil.

Lifter rods are underneath the valve cover and then underneath the lifters.
Another option is you could have a cracked exhaust manifold. Find out if it's coming from inside the motor or outside first. Then you'll be able to start pinpointing the problem .

4 things to check right now: Oil life, Oil level, Tick from inside the motor(lifter), Tick from outside the motor(exhaust manifold).

please tell us what motor we are working on? 4.7L V8 or 4.0L I6?

Will make it easier to diagnose.

Does it tick when not moving?

COuld be something simple like something hitting a moving belt.

When was last oil change and what kind of oil and weight of oil?
