Hi fellows, I am new. The problem that I have is with a 96 Grand Cherokee, I am losing oil, but it is not leaking and I do not have any oil in my driveway or any where else. Is it possible that my jeep can be burning it off. I am talking 3 to 4 quarts every two weeks. What can I do?

Which engine do you have, the 4.0 I-6,or the 5.2 V-8? and how many miles are on it?

3/4 quarts every 2 weeks? i'd say you have some severely worn valve seals and or piston rings and may be due for a new motor

Okay fellows I think that I may have a reprieve. Just came back from the shop and I was told that my jeep was not smoking as bad as I thought. But that I may have a small oil pan leak, and to add some stop smoke or engine restore and keep a check on it. Thanks for the replies.

What did they do to make that determination. If they did a compression test or a leakdown test then I may agree but outside those tests I am unsure if I would just let it go.
You never stated which engine you have or the mileage!

this makes no sense to me...you first said your losing 3 to 4 quarts every two weeks with no oil on the ground, then you say a mechanic tells you you have a small pan leak and to use stop smoke? how would a small leak cause that much oil lose, none of it on the ground and how would stop smoke stop a leak???

Gentlemen,I myself am somewhat confused. But the saying goes; Never look a gifthorse in the mouth. Let me try and explain this again. I purchased the vehicle used from a individual seller. In order to get it home I had to buy a can of stp and put it in the gas tank in order to help dry the water out of the gas tank. A week later I put in plugs, wires, distributer cap and rotor. Then because it ran so cold in the morning I also change out the thermostat, which by the way did not help. The following week I took the car into SuperLube and had an oil change. Now this is where the plot thickens,so try and follow me. I asked for the standard service, now just that morning I went by Autozone and put in a new airfilter. When I came outside to pay for the service, I found my airfilter sitting on the side of the motor. Now remember I just bought a new filter that morning,so I asked why was my filter sitting out of the container, but recieved no answer. From that day on I have been experiencing phantom oil leaks. The shop that I went to told me that there was some small drops around my oil pan but not enough to really worry about. Then he stuck his finger in my tailpipe and wiped the inside of it and said that if it had been burning all the oil from the tailpipe that there would be a oily sheen on his finger. then after cranking the car and revving the motor a few times he could not see enough smoke to warrant it being blown out. That is when he told me to use some stop smoke and or engine restore, because I explained to him that some mornings I had to let the car idle some mornings from 30 minutes to an hour in order to bring the motor up to operating temperture. And that is my story. Thank you for listening!

they might not have completed the service.. thats why you might be missing 3 to 4 quarts of oil... IDK, that is a strange story...

also I would have not taken the vehicle out of there until they clarify all your questions, for example the air filter one..

if you know how to change your oil do it yourself, anymore i know you can almost pay to have it done for the same price you pay for the filter and oil but at least you know its done right. just my thought

Most of the special oil/filter deals i see are based on 5 quarts of oil, the 4.0L takes 6. You may have left a quart low from the beginning, add that to some blowby and leakage from the oil filter adaptor/rear main etc it's certainly possible to be a few quarts low in a few weeks.
