Default Brakes Making Clunking Noise

Hi all! I'm new here and so grateful for any help.

I've got two things happening with my 2001 GC Ltd, but here's the one I'm most concerned about: the brakes have started making a clunking noise. It happens pretty regularly - probably every tenth brake or so, but not every single time I brake. I've tried pumping the brakes to see if I could reproduce it, sometimes it makes the sound, sometimes not. No clunks at all when I go over speed bumps or hit pot holes.

I recorded it - you can hear the sound quite clearly here (literally in the first second or two - had to upload a bunch of black so file was big enough):

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

Mine were making a clunking noise a couple weeks ago, it turned out that the caliper was loose and the bolts had just loosened over time

Is that the sort of thing that I could fix myself? I'd be thrilled if all I need to do is tighten some bolts.

The caliper mounts on a bracket with 2 slider pins. They are 7mm allen. The bracket mounts to the spindle carrier with 2 bolts. I don't remember what size they are, but these are the 2 they're talking about. Most of the time they require a long breaker arm to loosen, but if they weren't tightened properly on the last brake job, they could be loose. This bracket must be removed to pull the rotor.

Not sure what kind of brake setup a 2001 GC LTD has but yea, what the other guy said. My brakes may be different in my Cherokee than what you have.

Yeah, the WJ has dual piston front calipers. IDK what your XJ has. They are huge compared to the older ones. That's why they had to change the bolt pattern and go to 16" wheels.

If you want to find lots of good info about your jeep, go to wjjeeps.com

Perfect - sounds like I have a very clear direction and some homework to do. Thank you!!! I'll report back.

XJ has single piston and the caliper is just one peice, there isn't a bracket thing.
