Default block options?

What other block can I use for my 03 l6 Cherokee? I doubt I could use the earlier l6 blocks as they have distributors right?

99 and up WJ and TJ engines will work. You can not use an XJ engine.

As long as it's from a 99 WJ or TJ.

I learned this the hard way. My xj started as a donor to my WJ. 99 X to a 00 W. Wondered why the oil filter way in a different position. Learned a lesson.
I know that the 99 originally ran a coil pack for ignition but my motor has a dis. I did know it was not the original so someone put a different motor in. My guess is it's just the mounts that changed. Everything else either fits just right or can be converted (position of A/C and alternator etc) if I understand correctly.

Wait! Didn't Busted just tell you an XJ motor wouldn't work?

Your WJ brackets won't bolt to the XJ block. Again, you need an engine from either a WJ or TJ, NOT an XJ.

Sorry guys. I didn't realize that xj's existed in 99. I thought all cherokees in 99 where wj. That's why I'm confused. So I'm back to square one.

This may help:

XJ Cherokee and ZJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.

2000+ TJ Wrangler and WJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.

XJ/ZJ blocks and 2000+ TJ/WJ blocks do not interchange without significant modifications. (1991 to 1995 YJ and 1997-1999 4.0L TJ Wrangler blocks will interchange in XJ/ZJ and visa-versa).

TJ/WJ 4.0L Engine blocks underwent clean sheet design changes effective in the 1999 WJ Grand and 2000 TJ Wrangler. These blocks are not interchangeable with XJ/ZJ engine blocks. The reason is motor mount bolt holes and belt driven accessory mounting bolt holes are in different locations, or not present at all, TJ/WJ vs. XJ/ZJ.

XJ: "Regular" (not Grand) Cherokees 84-01
ZJ: Grand Cherokee 93-98 (Gen1)
WJ: Grand Cherokee 99-04 (Gen2)
YJ: Wrangler 87-95 (Gen1)
TJ: Wrangler 97-06 (Gen2)

Thank you! That's answers my question!
