Default Front Differential

Hey guys, after i went wheeling my front differential started making some bad sounds considering i got stuck in a puddle up to my door in my 94 5.2L....

I had to put it in 4Lo to get out and it did just fine and didn't make any sound or indication till i was on the road. I took the front driveshaft out everything is fine with the yolks and the shaft. I believe the front ring and pinion snapped cause its a loud clanking sound everytime the wheels turn.

Im gonna replace the whole front differential set-up, now does it matter if its from a I6 or the 5.2 V8? Are the gear ratios different? Im gonna go to the junk yard but need to know if I have to get one from a 5.2L truck.....

I'm pretty sure all you really need to do is just make sure that the gear ratio is the same.

Pretty much, I believe all automatic GC's had a 3.73 D30 up front so any axle should work but make sure you do more research first.

This!

OP-On the early model V8 ZJ's (i.e. 93-95) V8's could come with 3.55 or 3.73 gearing. As opposed to late model V8's only came with 3.73 gearing. It has absolutely nothing to do with what kind of transmission was installed from the factory. Double check your D30 to see what gearing you have.

Rear axles and ratios in ZJs:
93-98 4.0 w/o tow package; d35 3.55
93-98 4.0 w/ tow package; d35 3.73
93-95 5.2; d35 3.73 (some early, non-tow ZJs have 3.55s)
96-98 5.2; d44a 3.73
98 5.9; d44a 3.73

Obviously the front would be the same.

Actually it's copy pasta from somewhere on JeepForums, forgot to grab the username though, so whoever originally wrote it, props go to them.
