I bought a 99 WJ two weeks ago and the guy said the tires roared on it and when i drove it sounded like they did. I repalced the tires and now it still is making front end niose from either a hub or the front diff. The niose starts at 35 and is realy loud at 60 It sound like mud tires riding down the road. ANY guess as what the issue is???

could be a couple of things, wheel bearing,pinion bearing or a differential bearing. if you can get a sthoscope and jack stands and jack it up safely and run the vehicle up to speed with a buddies help and place scope near each part, careful dont touch spinning parts.

Thanks but dont ahve enough jack stands to get the hole jeep off of the ground or a garage; just a back yard. Thanks for the ideal though

To check hub bearing is easy. Just jack a wheel and grab it in 6-12 and 9-3 position and try to wiggle. If it does have a "play" then it is a hub bearing. The diff bearing test while driving. Pick up a speed and coast. If you hear noise while picking up the speed and no noise while coasting then it is your rear pinion bearing. Front pinion bearing will make noise while coasting. Making turns will tell you of diff bearings. If you hear a noise while making a turn then it is your diff bearing ( assuming that you check the hub first). Replacing hub bearing is not that hard, but if you have pinion or diff bearings gone then I would recommend junk yard or $800 drive line shop.

I took it to guy that used to work for jeep. He said it is the front pinion bearing. It looks like the sorry guy i bought it from lied because no one has been in the front or rear diffs. He thinks he can fix it but i dont have the money. I borrowed money to buy this thing and now here it sets in my driveway and cant drive it. I REALLY love jeeps but every time i get one i end up having to spend to much money on it. Maybe the last jeep i buy. I still got my 98 for sale but no takers yet. Thanks for the help guys but i am bumbed out.

I do not know of what tcase you have. You could take the front drive shaft off and drive on rear. I did on mine 96 and drove for a while. Some tcase will not allow you to do it. Someone here my have better idea.
