SOMEWHERE on this forum there is a good write-up on a Taurus fan install, complete with a parts list. He used an aluminum sleeve in the upper radiator hose to mount his sensor. It looked like a nice job.

Busted, that controller looks to be adjustable. Nice.

It is adjustable and has worked perfectly since the day I installed it. I took a fan assembly from a 94 Ford Taurus with 3.0, it's a two speed, but I only wired up the high speed. I had an old radiator from my ZJ to use as a mock up. I had to trim a lot to make it fit perfectly. I used some weather strip along the edges to seal the shroud and to keep it from wearing a hole in the radiator. Two simple brackets up top and a couple of those auxiliary transmission cooler zip tie type things at the bottom. The best mod under the hood so far.

Looks great. I bet that heavy fan turning from the crank robs a lot of power. Also it gives me ideas on using that pulley somehow for a homemade supercharger. Even if I make some contraption that does not give the boost of a real supercharger it will still help feed the intake so it will breath easier. Then I have to wonder about vacuum loss, and the mass air flow sensors and the computer keeping up with it. And possibly will need bigger injectors. I guess injector sizes are the new carburetor jets, lol

JMHO, and I'm an old fart, but why mess with a good, strong, reliable engine?

Do whatever blows up your skirt, it's your jeep.

I totally agree with you Dave. With all of the "hop ups" that I have done to my 4.0 , they haven't really made much of a difference in performance or fuel mileage. You simply can not make horsepower out of a 4.0 on the cheap. Especially in a ZJ! The transmission robs a lot of the power, then you have an engine driven fan that take about 15 horsepressures to run. You tack on the extra weight that the ZJ packs around and you have a recipe for a slow Jeep. But hey, it gets crappy gas mileage too! My ZJ is a pig in the hills because of the 32" tires and 3.73 gearing. On flat ground it's not so bad and I picked up a few MPG on the freeway...as long as it's flat.

Back in the day, I put on Thorley headers, high flow cat and a Gibson exhaust. Absolutely no felt difference other than maybe a mental boost. The headers cracked and I replaced them with a import replacement, exhaust rusted out and replaced all with off the shelf Napa stuff. If you want to up your seat of the pants feel...buy new gears. I moved from a 3.73 to a 4.10 and got my power back. Admittedly that was my xj, but same motor same issues.

Yes, and the XJ's lighter still. IDK what the XJ weighs, but my WJ's registration weight is 3980 lbs. Call it 2 tons! To my way of thinking the 4.0 kicks it around adequately. It's not a rocket, but it did save me from being run down by a semi on a merge.

I think the 4.0 has decent power and mileage for an SUV. About that homemade supercharger , has anyone done anything like that? And you guys are right , adding mods is often a waste of money unless you go extreme. If you go extreme you may as well get a stroked and bored engine with high flow heads and another cam, and probably the gearing , tranny work , and electronic system. I get caught up in wanting to improve things that are pretty good already, the advertisers certainly are good at their jobs making people think they need stuff they don't. With any car almost there isn't much improvement from exhausts and stuff. And if there is improvement you really can't feel it. I know there are some poorly engineered cars that can be improved on a lot, but for the most part the factory engineers do a good job.

The only way to get instant gratification is to bleed a little Nitrous into it, but then you're sacrificing longevity.

Back in the 50's, I've seen people fool around with medical oxygen with devastating results, but they tell me nitrous is safe. Oh, really? If you go that route, stick with only a 50 hp boost. This stuff only works at wide open throttle, so what's the point on a trail rig?

As far as superchargers go, I've seen heater blower motors rigged to add a bottom end boost, but that was with carbs.
