'96 Jeep Grand Cherokee FM Radio Problem
Hi everyone,
I have a '96 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited whose radio has been giving me problems for years. When I turn on the radio: the CD player, tape deck, and AM radio work perfectly, but the FM radio only works intermittently.
When the FM radio doesn't work there is very low static noise that comes out of the speakers and the radio will constantly seek to find a station to hook up to.
Does anyone have any experience with this problem or know a possible solution.
As an aside, the truck HAS the Infinity Gold Stereo System that Jeep installed stock on all its' limited models.
Thank you everyone in advance for any help you may give!

I have the same problem with mine. I read where the problem is in the FM tuner but nothing really specific. When I find the time I am going to open up the radio and take a look.
I seem to be able to get mine to play by turning the radio off. Start the engine and drive for a while then turn radio on. It often works for me but sometimes not. It can turn off whenever it wants to. I can't relate the problem it to anything. The problem appears to be internal to the radio.
I, too, am giving thought to an aftermarket radio.

I must be an antenna short, try wiring to another antenna and see what you get. I noticed playing with the wire it will work, so I am thinking a wire short or something.

Under the dash on the pass. side, remove the kick panel cover. Trace the antennae cable where it comes in from the door pillar/inner fender until you find the coupling. It's probably loose or corroded. If not you more than likely need a new radio. Any mid '90's Chrysler radio will fit and work just fine. If you can find another Infinity unit cheap grab it, but it may have the same issues. JMO

As an aside I have a 97 GC with the 6 CD changer in the rear.
The changer is identical - same CD cassette sliding door etc as the one in my daily driver 95 Jaguar XJ6 - without Jaguar marked on the unit of course. If any GC owner has a problem with the changer I think the Jag unit would fit

Problem Gets Worse
Mine started like this around 2 years ago, I have a 1996 Grand Cherokee Laredo. The FM radio just quit working one day, Didn't bother me too much, until just yesterday the CD player and Cassette Player quit working as well. I love my old beast and am trying to get this issue resolved. Is it just the radio unit itself causing this problem, or is it a wiring issue back in the dash?

Mine did this same thing when I first got it like stated before trace the antenna coax to the passenger side behind the glove box there is a connection that has a spring inside it remove the spring and reconnect it what happens is over time the spring works the connection loose and in my eyes there was no reason for the spring to be there in the first place mine works great now

I replied to OP, post #3. In my case it was the radio that malfunctioned. I opened it up looking for signs of electronic failure but could not find a thing. I installed a Sony headunit and have been pretty happy. The radio has 2 AM bands and 3 FM bands. It also plays CD's, flashdrives or an auxiliary player like and iPod. It has a remote for easy tuning.
It was an easy install and plays with the infinity gold system. So wiring was good and so was my antenna. Just a radio problem. There are lots of replacement headunits so finding the right one can be time consuming.
