'95 Grand Laredo 4WD Only???
I am looking at a 1995 Grand Cherokee Laredo. I went and test drove it today and the first thing I noticed was it felt and sounded as if it was in 4x4. The selector only showed 4 HI, N, and 4 LO as choices. The guy selling it says it is always in 4x4.
My 94 XJ Has 2WD, 4WD HI, 4WDL and N selections. When you have it in 4WD HI it is noticeable by the feel and the heavier sound I suppose of the transfer case being engaged. That's the way this Grand Cherokee felt.
My question is...Is this correct? Does this particular model Jeep ONLY drive in 4x4 just in either a High or Low setting?

It sounds like that ZJ has the 5.2L engine and the NP249 transfer case.
Both are good and have good on-road characteristics.
Those first generation NP249 transfer cases can suffer the viscous coupling failure when all four tires don't have identical circumference. If so, the failure repair is not horrible and the cost is okay, as-shown in this this reply.
Yes, the NP249 is a full-time four wheel drive transfer case.

It has an np249 transfer case which I am not a fan of, however you can swap an np242 out of another ZJ in pretty easily.
