Default 4WD linkage issue?

I admit that I screwed this up. I shifted on the fly from 2 to 4 WD. I know...Anyway, now that I have done this, I can get it OUT of 4 WD occasionally, and if it is in 4WD, the only way I can describe it is that it feels like the front tires are moving at a different speed than the rear tires, or it hops, is really jerky, hard to control...please tell me I am not the only one whao has done this...and any suggestions on how to fix it are GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks!

That is the way that Jeep suggests you shift but at a low speed in a loose dirt area. Getting it out is a little harder if it hasn't been used in awhile . Accellerate along at again a slow speed. Blip the throttle and then as you let off shove the lever forward putting it back into 2WD. That always worked for me.

I was going about 5 miles per hour, not too fast. The problem is that now, when it is in 4WD, that is when it starts to act up.

"Act up" how? Describe it for us. Did you try the accepted method for returning to 2WD?
We will try to help you with your problem but need a further explanation.

Sorry, let me try this again. I have tried the accepted method of returning it to 2WD, and that seems to work. However, when I go to use 4WD again, that is when I am getting the issues that I described above. It is hard to control, the tires feel like they are moving at different speeds (front different than rear). The tire speed thing may just be misperception on my part though. It gets jerky and sort of lurches forward instead of just smoothly accelerating. i am not driving it fast when i do this, maybe 7 miles an hour. I really am at a loss. i apologise if I did not clearly state the issue before, I appreciate everyones help!

akjeep you did fine. The issues you describe are very unusual. Is the Jeep stock. No one changed the differentials in the past? If you jack it up one end at a time you can rotate the wheel and count the yoke revolutions to determine if someone has installed a different ratio differential. If so you will need to re-gear one or the other.

I don't know if this will help determine an issue or not, but I had used the 4WD with no problem prior to my doing this. Everything is stock, I am married, so I doubt that will be changing...:-)

First, are you putting it in high or low range? The problem you describe sound like someone that put it in low range for the first time..

Now the other problem it could be (and I hope it isn't) is you broke either the internal shift fork or you broke a planetary gear..

Wow, I can't believe that I did not put down the year, make or model, I'm off to a roaring start huh? It's a 97 Grand Cherokee, inline six, completely stock. U can't think of anything else that may be pertinent, but I am sure I am missing something...

Thanks again folks!

Need to know what T-case you have to give some more input.... What's it say on the T-case shifter bezel?
