Default 42re tranny help

I have a 95 GC, 4.0, 2WD. Recently had the tranny rebuilt, now intermittent O/D. Tranny guy replaced solonoids 3 tines..and another tcm, still same, even put hotter thermostat, thinking it may be a temp issue. .still o/d works when it wants... it has code 16 which is temp sensor input, but it's been replaced twice..checked fuses harness don't know what else to do, we're both stumped and puzzled...
Any idea? Any and all input would help..thanks fellow Jeep owners

Hi does the code 16 mean to low temp, or to high temp? Or maybe there is an electrical connection problem between the thermistor and the TCM. Maybe this article helps a bit.

Okay, according to my 42re manual, a code 16 means a lose of signal from the transmission fluid temp sensor (thermistor) located on the valve body and immersed in trans fluid. This sensor will not allow the O/D to engage if the fluid is below 30*F or above 260*F and will engage the converter clutch. It may be a break in the wiring to it or malfunction of the thermistor. An open circuit resistance check should tell if it's bad or not. Resistance should be 1000 ohms at 70*F. Looking at the case electrical connector, it's pin 8 and pin 3. Pin 8 is the center pin. Pin 3 is at 5 o'clock when looking into it.

Dave 1123,
Supposidly, the sensor has been replaced already twice. Is it possible a bad tcm, I grabbed one from a local pick n pull, and doesn't shift to O/D at all. The OEM one works when the temp gets hot enough...or when it wants, I guess. It's just really weird and seems like it's something stupid, but can't put finger on it...

Okay, the only other thing I can think of is a break of the wire inside the insulation on the sensor wire. Do a continuity check or resistance check of the wire from pin 8 (center pin) of the transmission harness connecter and pin D6 of the TCM (violet/tan). With the meter connected, flex the cable around and see if the meter changes. My meter has an audible signal feature for continuity checks which makes it easy. The thermistor is only supplied with 5 volts so the returning signal, figuring the 1000 ohm resistance of the sensor, will be very much less. Also, check the pins on both ends for any trace of corrosion.

The TCM monitors a lot of different sensors to control shift points. The temp sensor is just one of them. We are concentrating on the temp sensor because of your code 16.

That's about all I've got. I hope it helps.
