Default 42re Overdrive?

Hello, I have a 96 grand cherokee Orvis Edition (so rare! lol) that I've owned for about 4 years. The original owner towed this thing behind his RV 3 times a year, every year, from NH to AZ which I think may have put some wear on the tranny as the jeep is full time 4WD.

Now its always shifted hard and late in the 4 years ive owned it, but just the other day the console display was reading Trans. Overtemp and sure enough it's having a hard time getting into OD on the highway.

I just had the oil changed this AM and the fluid checked out fine but the tech said the tranny was probably on its last leg.

Anyone know of this OD issue and any solutions other than a rebuild???

Also, I know someone with a 97 and 98 Cherokee that are 4.0 automatics (AW4 transmissions) this is not the same as whats in my 96 Grand (42re) right? SO a swap wouldn't be compatible if my trannys junk???

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

The swap wouldn't work unfortunately. You'd have to find another 42re. I've had two zjs and man do those transmissions LOVE to slip and shift late.

I can't say that I've heard of your od issue. But I do know that my old zj would fight in and out of od. It would never just stay in overdrive. It would go in fall out go in fall out...
