42 RE oops!

recently aquired a 93 ZJ 4.0 chopped down buggy. Was told it had AW4 trans. After repairing a severed trans cooler line i topped off the tranny fluid with DEX/MER..only to discover it actually has 42RE. I added approx 3 qts.ATF to refill. I did notice trans started acting strange after about 30 miles..parked the buggy. planning on trans service now but wondering if anyone can tell me what effect this oops might have on the already lame 42RE? Not looking for speculators..i'm already there! Thanks in advance for experienced input.

BTW...my understanding is the 42RE is supposed to operate on synthetic ATF...is this correct?

The 42re takes ATF+4 Which is ATF with additives, not synthetic. Google ATF+4 and Chrysler has a bulletin about what constitutes an exceptable fluid. I think the major difference is the anti-chatter additives and the base stock.
