4.0L engine - interchangeable ????
Hi All,
I'm new to the Grand Cherokee side of things. I have a fair amount of experience on the XJ side.
I'm looking at a 2001 Grand (186K) with a blown head gasket and/or warped head - WJ was badly overheated. Was thinking that, instead of repair, just R & R the engine if one can be found fairly cheap. Will just about any 4.0L high output long block work for this vehicle?
Any advice is welcome.

Nope! Only a 99-04 block will work because they moved the motor mounts on the block and the oil filter location. Believe it or not, Chrysler had the move the motor mounting locations in the WJ to balance the new 4.7 V8, SO they had to change the 4.0 block to still fit! Duh! There are aftermarket motor mounts to put the 5.2 and the 5.9 in the WJ, so I think the older 4.0 would fit using those mounts, but what do I know?
I just went thru the 0331 cracked head syndrome, but I caught it BEFORE it ruined the bearings. Only the 99-01 4.0s had that head but it included the XJs as well. The head was recast for 02 and supposedly it's okay. They finally decided to do away with the 4.0 in 05 because the motor was too tall, too long, and too heavy for the next phase of jeeps. They replaced it with a 3.7 V6 based on the 4.7 V8. Good bye, old friend!
