2000 Cherokee sport belt replacement
Hi,
I've got a 2000 cherokee sport I'm trying to put a serpentine belt onto, however, I'm having trouble. I loosened up the tension pulley under the P/S pump but that didn't seem to help much. Can anyone walk me through this? My cherokee is an inline 6 and belt goes as follows:

a/c p/s
fan w/p
tensioner
alt
crank
**Belt goes around a/c, alt, crank, and p/s...fan and w/p touch the flat side of belt.
I loosened up the alt but that really doesn't help at all and the p/s pump is attached to a bracket in three places bolted to the block so I can't really loosen that. Please help!!
Thanks!

This forum has a great search feature. I just searched serpentine in the titles and found the same thread I found when I swapped mine out:

Thanks robert, I've loosened the tensioner like the post say's and I can move the idler pulley up and down, but that doesn't help my cause at all. I still can't get the new belt around everything.....

Yep....I had the wrong belt. Went back to the parts store and got the right 'Cherokee' belt. FYI: the belt for the cherokee is longer then the belt for the 'Grand Cherokee'.

How to replace the belt on the 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport
I just changed the belt on my 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport. It was a little
tricky but here is how to do it:
I had to remove the electric fan that was directly in front of the belt
tensioning pulley in order to loosen it. It's the smaller plastic fan on the
right side if you're looking at the engine. To remove the fan you have to
remove the 2 small hex screws at the top. The 2 clips at the bottom
should just release as you pull up.
Net you need a 15mm socket to loosen the bolt on the tensioning pulley.
The pulley is just under the steering pump pulley. Turn it counter-clockwise
about 5 or six times or until it's loose. Now find the long adjustment bolt.
It's just to the left of the power steering pump. You'll have to loosen it
a lot (or at least I did). Use the 15mm socket.
Afterwards the tension pulley will be loose enough for you to pull the belt
off. Make sure before you remove the belt that you have a drawing of how
the belt is routed. I had to draw mine out because the diagram on the fan
shroud was too old to read.
Start by folding the belt and pushing it past the left side of the fan. Loop
the alternator and then simply follow the drawing. It may take a few tries
but don't give up. After it's on tighten the adjustment screw and then the
tension pulley and you're done! Hope this helps. Good Luck!
